and at the local library.
If you suffer from a gluten allergy, sometimes known as celiac disease, you
know you can’t have a sandwich for lunch, because most bread is on the ‘do
not eat’ list. However, French and Italian breads are made without gluten
and can be eaten in moderation. There are also several websites that sell
gluten-free products such as flour for making breads and cakes and cookies.
One thing to remember as a business person is that there will be doughnuts
and cake and the vending machines, but they are all off limits to a gluten
suffering person. Once you begin to eat gluten-free, you will start to feel
better in a couple of days, however the damage may not heal for up to two
years, even then, you can not go back to eating whatever you want. A
gluten-free diet is a diet for life.
It’s hard to stay on a gluten-free diet (glutenfreies
Essen) when everyone around you is going out for lunch or to
celebrate something from the office. There are ways to go out to eat and
maintain your gluten-free diet if you are a business person. One way is to
call ahead if you know where you are meeting everyone for lunch. Ask if they
have a gluten-free menu and if not, ask what is on the menu that does not
contain gluten. You may have to visit with your co-workers while munching on
a dry salad, unless you ask for salsa, which is usually gluten-free, you
would have to check the label, but salads are an old standby. Most
restaurants nowadays will accommodate food allergies if they can. That’s
just good customer service, good business.
The gluten-free diet can be challenging, especially for newly diagnosed
patience’s who are used to eating whatever they want. Some people find help
in support groups and family members, although it may take family members a
little longer to come around, you may have to eat your own food for a while,
unless everyone in the family wants to eat healthy.
Going on business trips is another place in which a gluten-free diet may be
a challenge to some business people. They may be taking clients out for
drinks and dinners after meetings and presentations. Remember, most alcohol
contains barley and therefore should be avoided. Eating out would require
the same preparations as it does back at the office. Decide where you are
going, call ahead of time, explain your gluten allergies and ask if they can
accommodate you. Again, if they can not or will not, a salad is the best
thing on the menu, without the dressing of course.
Gluten is used in some medications so it would be wise to check with your
doctor or pharmacy to see if what you’ve been prescribed contains gluten, if
it does, ask the doctor for a different medication. It is important for your
overall health to stay gluten-free.
